How licensing works
Licenses attach to your products, define delivery formats and usage rights, and generate the agreement your buyer receives. Start from seven built-in templates.
Every track and album you sell carries one or more licenses. A license bundles three things:
- Delivery formats: which files the buyer receives: MP3, WAV, and track stems.
- Usage terms: what the buyer may do with the music: distribution copies, streams, music videos, performances, broadcasting, and more.
- The agreement: the legal contract Tuneboom generates for each purchase, as a hosted web page and a signed PDF. See Agreements.
You manage all of this from Licenses in the Tuneboom sidebar. Each license you enable appears as a purchase option on the products it's attached to, with its own price. That means one track can sell as a cheap MP3 lease, a premium WAV lease, and a buy-out exclusive, all at once.
Leases vs. exclusives
A non-exclusive license (a lease) lets you sell the same track to any number of buyers, each within their own usage caps. An exclusive license transfers unlimited rights to a single buyer. Once it sells, the work is removed from further sale.
The seven templates
When you create a license you start from a template. Six built-ins ship with reviewed agreement text adapted from a lawyer-drafted music licensing agreement; the seventh, Custom license, starts you in the Advanced clause editor to author your own terms from scratch.
| Template | Type | Formats | Default track / album price | Key default terms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Lease (MP3) | Non-exclusive | MP3 | $29.95 / $49.95 | 2,500 distribution copies · 50,000 audio streams · 1 music video · no broadcasting |
| Premium Lease (WAV) | Non-exclusive | MP3 + WAV | $49.95 / $99.95 | 10,000 distribution copies · 500,000 audio streams · 3 music videos · for-profit performances · broadcasting |
| Unlimited Lease | Non-exclusive | MP3 + WAV + Stems | $99.95 / $199.95 | Unlimited everything · transferable |
| Exclusive License | Exclusive | MP3 + WAV + Stems | $299.95 / $499.95 | Unlimited everything · transferable · removed from further sale · requires checkout acceptance |
| Sync License | Non-exclusive | MP3 + WAV | $149.95 / $249.95 | Unlimited use in film, video, podcast, advertising, and game productions |
| Free / Demo | Non-exclusive | MP3 | $0 / $0 | Non-commercial evaluation use · 10,000 audio streams · mandatory credit · no distribution copies |
| Custom license | Non-exclusive | MP3 | $29.95 / $49.95 | Author your own text and clauses from scratch (opens in Advanced mode) |
Templates are starting points, not locks: after starting a license from a template you can change every term, price, and format. The Exclusive License template is the only one that ships with Require acceptance at checkout already switched on. See Checkout consent.
What the badges mean
Each row in Licenses carries badges that describe the license at a glance:
- Exclusive: the license grants exclusive rights.
- A template badge (for example Basic Lease (MP3)): the template the license started from.
- Advanced: the license is edited clause-by-clause in Advanced mode.
- Checkout consent: buyers must accept the terms before they can check out.
The Usage terms column shows the same buyer-facing summary that appears at checkout and on the hosted agreement, so the list, the editor, and the buyer can never disagree.
Where licenses appear
- On products: every enabled license attached to a track or album becomes a purchase option on your storefront, priced per license. You set per-track price overrides in the track editor's pricing section.
- At checkout: each line item shows its license summary, and licenses that require acceptance block checkout until the buyer agrees. See Checkout consent.
- After purchase: every licensed item gets a generated agreement with a hosted page and PDF. See Agreements.
License limits
Licenses are available on every plan; the number of active licenses you can run depends on your plan. Deactivated licenses don't count toward the limit. See Plans.
